Ornithogalum juncifolium is a plant of the genus ornithogalum in the family of asparagaceae (Asparagaceae). The specific epithet juncifolia is derived from the name of the genus Juncus and the Latin word folius for 'leafy'.

description

Ornithogalum juncifolium grows in groups. The above-ground, spherical onions have a diameter of up to 4 centimeters and are just as high. The green tissue is visible under the gray-brown onion scales. The linear, thread-like, green leaves appear with the flowers. The leaf blade is 10 to 20 inches long and 2 to 3 millimeters wide. The base of the leaves is divorced and tubular. It forms a membranous collar on the onion.

The paniculate, up to 15-flowered inflorescence reaches a length of up to 40 centimeters. The upright flower stem is petal-round. The triangular bracts are thorn-pointed eyelets. The flowers are on peduncles about 2 centimeters long . The inflorescence is star-shaped. The linear-lanceolate tepals are 7 to 10 millimeters long and 2.5 millimeters wide. The stamens are 5 millimeters long. The outer stamens are linear, the inner ones are shorter and ovoid-pointed. The 3 millimeters long and short-stalked ovary is egg-shaped. The upright stylus is 2.5 millimeters long.

The egg-shaped fruits are 5 millimeters long.

Ornithogalum juncifolium is widespread in South Africa on rocky and water-permeable soils.

The first description by Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin was published in 1797.
