Ornithogalum sibthorpii is a plant from the family of asparagus plants (Asparagaceae).

description

Ornithogalum sibthorpii is a perennial , herbaceous bulbous plant that reaches heights of growth of 5 to 15 (20) centimeters. The onion scales are free. The shaft is underground. The leaves are (1) 1.5 to 4.5 (7) millimeters wide. The cluster consists of (2) 4 to 7 (15) flowers. The petals are 12.5 to 26 millimeters in size. The fruit stalks are knocked down. At the base they have a thickened joint, after flowering their tip is slack and furrowed. The ovary is egg-shaped and about the same length as the stylus.

The flowering period extends from February to March.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14 or 28.

Occurrence

Ornithogalum sibthorpii was described from the area around the Marmara Sea in northwest Turkey, where it occurs on the European and Asian sides. Occurrences of this species are also found in Greece and Crete. Data from the former Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and Romania are uncertain or concern related species; those from northwestern Iran result from the amalgamation with Ornithogalum sigmoideum refuted by Speta .

Systematics

The first description was in 1809 by James Edward Smith , who named it with the illegitimate name Ornithogalum nanum , which was given in 1796 . Werner Greuter replaced this invalid name in 1967 with Ornithogalum sibthorpii . In 1984 this species was synonymous with the Ornithogalum sigmoideum described in Northeastern Anatolia in the Flora of Turkey , but differs from this by non-overgrown onion leaves and the smooth, non-sawn ridges on the ovary. Related species are Ornithogalum pluttulum Speta and Ornithogalum saginatum Speta . In the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families the synonymisation of is Ornithogalum sibthorpii maintained in Vascular Plants of Greece: An Annotated Checklist is Ornithogalum sibthorpii accepted.
