The Ortel (German Ortelsberg , 553.9 m) is a regularly shaped cone mountain in the Lusatian Mountains in Liberecký kraj in the Czech Republic .
Location and surroundings
The Ortel is located about 3 kilometers south of Cvikov (Zwickau in Bohemia) and 1.5 kilometers northwest of Lindava (Lindenau), a district of Cvikov. It is one of the numerous phonolite peaks of the Lusatian Mountains.
geology
The Ortel was created by the penetration of magma between strata at shallow depths, the bulging of the cover layers of the North Bohemian chalk depression above the magma chamber , the solidification of the magma into phonolite and the subsequent erosion of the soft cover layer of chalk sandstone. The exposed phonolite dome today shows isolated phonolite debris heaps; the southern flank is characterized by steep rock faces. In the summit area you can find some plate-shaped rock formations. Today there are old abandoned phonolite quarries at the foot of the mountain.
history
A pagan cult site and later the execution site of Cvikov or Lindava are said to have been on the top of the Ortel. However, these statements have not been proven. From this the German name Ortelsberg (from originally Judgment Mountain ) is derived. The mountain sparked the imagination of the local population; so there are a number of stories and legends. Among other things, dwarfs are said to have lived and baked bread on the summit.
flora
The mountain is mostly overgrown with beech , Norway maple and ash , which also cover the summit. On the south-east flank there is a remnant of natural oak forest. The undergrowth is formed, among other things, by the hollow larkspur , lily of the valley and the white swallow root.
view
Since the Ortel is forested, there are only opportunities for viewing above clearings and rocky outcrops below the summit. From the western ledge you have beautiful views of the Velký Bezděz (Bösig), the Provodínské Kameny (Mikenhahn stones), the Sloup castle , the Klíč (Kleis), the Bohemian Central Mountains and the Buková hora (Zinkenstein). From the summit itself there is no view due to the beech trees.
Routes to the summit
From the north-westerly direction, a yellow-marked hiking trail leads to a lookout point on the south-west slope. From here a wide path leads to the summit, which is no longer marked. You can go around the summit on a narrow path through the beech forest.
