The reddish silk moss ( Orthothecium rufescens ) is a deciduous moss species from the Plagiotheciaceae family .
features
Orthothecium rufescens is a showy, strong species with mostly copper-red color, only brownish to yellow-green in the shade. It forms loose, often extensive lawns. The stems are up to 10 centimeters long and sparsely branched. The upright leaves are up to 4 millimeters long, lanceolate, evenly drawn out into the long tip and clearly longitudinally folded. The leaf margins are entire, the rib is usually absent, more rarely it can be short and double indicated. The leaf cells are linear, 4 to 5 micrometers wide and 70 to 100 micrometers long, at the leaf base they are shorter and spotted.
The gender distribution is diocesan . Sporogons are rather rare. The capsule on the purple seta is upright and cylindrical, the capsule lid is conical and short-beaked.
Location requirements
The species grows on light to shady, moist to wet limestone and dolomite rocks . Common companion species are Barbula crocea , Gymnostomum aeruginosum or Hymenostylium recurvirostrum .

The moss is found in the northern hemisphere in central and northern Europe , northern Asia and North America .
As mountain moss in Germany , Austria and Switzerland it is common in the Alps and often found in large stands; it is rare outside the Alps.
