Ortwin Gamber

Ortwin Gamber (born March 21, 1925 in Enns ) is an Austrian art historian and weapons expert . He was director of the weapons collection at the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna .

Life

Ortwin Gamber was born in Upper Austria in 1925 as the son of a former professional officer and orientalist Emil Gamber , who came from a Swabian family, and his wife, a Croatian . From 1943 to 1945 he did military service in the Wehrmacht , most recently as an ensign in the artillery. After graduating from a secondary school, he studied archeology, history and art history at the University of Vienna . In 1950 he was at Karl M. Swoboda with the dissertation The plate armor in the 15th century to Dr. phil. PhD. In addition, he attended the course at the Vienna Institute for Austrian Historical Research from 1948 to 1950 (state examination 1950; term paper on the Innsbruck plumbing).

From 1945 to 1950 he was a volunteer at the weapons collection and at the wagon castle of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. He then became a contract employee of the scientific service. In 1956 he became a research assistant. Together with Friederike Klauner and Willibrord Neumüller, from 1963 to 1965 he reorganized the picture gallery of Kremsmünster Abbey . This was followed by appointments as curator II (1969) and first class (1965) at the Kunsthistorisches Museum. In 1976 he became a real councilor and, as the successor to Bruno Thomas, director of the weapons collection (later the armory and court hunting chamber) of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna; he remained in office until 1986.

He is the author of several books and numerous articles (including in the Lexicon of the Middle Ages and in the Reallexikon zur Deutschen Kunstgeschichte ).

In 1962 he became an honorary member of the Arms and Armor Society in London. In 1962 he received the Theodor Körner Prize .
