Oscar Masotta

Oscar Abelardo Masotta (born January 8, 1930 in Buenos Aires , † September 13, 1979 in Barcelona ) was an Argentine author , psychoanalyst , art critic and happening artist .

life and work

In the 1950s, Masotta participated in the literary magazine Contorno edited by Ismael and David Viñas . In 1960 he began to work on pop art and happenings . Masotta got involved with the Instituto Di Tella in the 1960s . From 1959 he was instrumental in making the theories of Jacques Lacan known in the Spanish-speaking world. In 1964 Masotta founded the Centro de Estudios Superiores de Arte at the Universidad de Buenos Aires , where he researched and taught. In 1966 he organized three happenings. El helicóptero (The Helicopter) , Para inducir el espíritu de la imagen (To Induce the Spirit of the Image) , and El mensaje fantasma (The Ghost Message) , which Dora García took up for a project. In 1974 he left Argentina. In 1979 he died in Barcelona. In 2017 several of his works were exhibited posthumously at documenta 14 in Kassel.
