Oscar Speyer
Oscar Speyer (born July 4, 1827 in Hersfeld , † January 6, 1882 in Berlin ) was a German geologist , zoologist and paleontologist .
Life
Speyer went to high school in Hanau and Kassel and attended the higher trade school in Kassel. At the same time he collected terrestrial and freshwater snails in the Hanau area and published about it in 1847. In 1848 he did an internship in the Hessian mining industry and studied mathematics and natural sciences in Marburg and Berlin from 1850, graduating as a secondary school teacher in 1852. From 1854 he was an intern and then Assistant teacher for mineralogy and geology at the higher trade school in Kassel. In 1855 he received his doctorate in Marburg. In addition to his teaching activities, he dealt with the fauna of the Tertiary in the area around Kassel, for example he collected systematic mollusc fossils ( conchylia ) and examined mastodon finds. From 1859 to 1865 he was managing director of the Association for Natural History in Kassel. In 1865 he became a full realteacher at the higher middle school in Fulda , where he founded an association for natural history in 1865. From 1873 he was at the Prussian Geological State Institute (PGLA), where he became royal state geologist in 1875. He produced numerous geological sheets (1: 25,000) in the Saale-Unstrut and Eichsfeld area and mapped for the geological overview map of the Harz . Most recently he managed the Jura and Chalk collections of the State Geological Museum in Berlin, where he built up a tertiary collection. He died of a heart attack on the way from the museum.
