Oscar Valdambrini

Oscar Valdambrini (born May 11, 1924 in Turin , † December 26, 1997 in Rome ) was an Italian trumpeter (also flugelhorn ) of modern jazz . With his trumpet style that Bebop - phrasing and cool jazz -Aesthetics union, and his with Gianni Basso led quintet he was one of the stars of Italian jazz.

Valdambrini, whose father was a violinist, studied violin and trumpet at the conservatory in his hometown until 1941. First he played in the orchestra of the Italian radio. After the Second World War he worked with Swiss musicians, then in Turin with guest soloists such as Rex Stewart (1948). He has operated from Milan since 1949 and has been involved in numerous recordings by Piero Rizza, Beppe Mojetta, Giampiero Boneschi and Gorni Kramer . In 1952 he founded a first quintet together with Gianni Basso in Milan, and shortly afterwards his own Sestetto Italiano . From 1955 he directed another quintet with Basso, the Quintetto Basso-Valdambrini , which was already the leading Italian combo in the 1950s and toured the United States in 1962. The quintet, which was occasionally expanded to a sextet, won many national polls and also worked with guest soloists such as Gerry Mulligan , Chet Baker , Lars Gullin , Stan Getz , Miles Davis and Conte Candoli . It recorded a total of thirteen albums.

He also played in Rome in 1957/58 in the Armando Trovajoli Big Band and took part in European tours by Gil Cuppini (1964 to 1971), Lionel Hampton , Duke Ellington (1967/68), Giorgio Gaslini (1968/69) and Maynard Ferguson (1970 / 71) part. From 1972 he was a member of the RAI orchestra. Between 1972 and 1974 the combo was reissued with Basso; then he worked with Dusko Goykovich and Kai Winding .

Valdambrini has made guest appearances at numerous European festivals and in 1993 gave concerts with the Italian All Stars in New York. He was also involved in recordings of Chet Baker (1959), Buddy Collette ( In Italy ) and Ennio Morricone .
