history

Origin and growth in Meerane (1849 to 1948)

Company FL Oschatz in Meerane (approx. 1892)

The company was founded in 1849 in the small Saxon town of Meerane by master plumber Franz Louis Oschatz as a craft business for plumbing, locksmithing and black plate work. From 1870 FL Oschatz manufactured containers for breweries and malt houses . The first steam boiler was manufactured in 1880 . Over the next few decades, the construction of steam boilers, pressure vessels and thermal engineering equipment developed into the main business area, and Oschatz grew into one of the leading boiler manufacturers in Germany.

Before and during the Second World War , parts for submarines, tanks and weapons were manufactured in the Oschatz factories. During the war, the factories were badly damaged by bombing raids.

Development from the German-German division (from 1948)

Steam boiler construction Meerane, Meerane (GDR)

After the Second World War and the occupation of East Germany by the Red Army in 1945, the company was expropriated by the Soviet Military Administration in Germany (SMAD) and converted into the state-owned company VEB Dampfkesselbau Meerane in 1948 . This company was one of the leading steam boiler manufacturers in the GDR. After the reunification , the VEB was privatized. Today it operates as Meeraner Dampfkesselbau .

Oschatz GmbH, Essen (Germany)

Parallel to the development at the headquarters in Meerane in the GDR, another successor was created in the FRG: In 1948 Hans Schrag, who had been design manager at Oschatz since 1936, founded a company for steam boiler and plant construction in Mannheim in West Germany. In coordination with the heirs of FL Oschatz, he was allowed to take over the Oschatz company in order to build on the company's reputation. Three years later, in 1951, the company moved to Essen, where it is still based today.

Over the next few decades Oschatz expanded its product range; In addition to steam boilers, more and more special thermal equipment was manufactured for metallurgical plants and the chemical industry. Starting in the 1990s in particular, Oschatz grew into a globally operating group of companies through the acquisition of companies and the establishment of foreign branches (Czech Republic, Denmark, Turkey, China ...).

At the beginning of 2017, Oschatz had to file for bankruptcy due to economic difficulties and massively cut staff. In mid-2017, Oschatz was taken over by the Austrian mechanical and plant engineering company Christof Industries .

Products and services

Historically, FL Oschatz KG was primarily known as an apparatus and steam boiler manufacturer. Oschatz manufactured various types of boilers for heating and power plants, but also for special applications such as steam locomotives.

Today the Oschatz Group produces components and complete systems and offers services for the following branches of industry:

  • Iron and steel metallurgy, especially waste heat recovery systems after sintering , coking and converter systems .
  • Non-ferrous metallurgy, in particular waste heat boilers in plants for the extraction of lead, copper, nickel, zinc or tin
  • Chemical industry, especially residue incineration and heat recovery systems, for example for the production of sulfuric acid, nitric acid, caprolactam or hydroxylamine
  • Energy and power plant technology, in particular steam boilers and furnaces for the utilization of biomass, residues and substitute fuels

Awards

In 2013 Oschatz received the Fray International Sustainability Award for his services to the development of systems for better use of resources and in particular for energy recovery.

According to a ranking by the Munich management consultancy MSG and the daily newspaper Die Welt , Oschatz was one of the 100 most successful German medium-sized companies in 2013.

2014 Oschatz was for the middle class Grand Prix of the Oskar Patzelt Foundation nominated.
