Oskar Baumgarten (agronomist)

Oskar Baumgarten (born October 25, 1907 in Halle / Saale ; † December 1, 2008 in Markkleeberg ) was a German agricultural scientist and university professor .

Baumgarten was born in Halle an der Saale, where he studied agriculture and economics and also received his doctorate. In 1935 he joined the NSDAP . He was also chief of staff in the Reichsnährstand . Baumgarten was a soldier in World War II from 1943 and then a Soviet prisoner of war until 1949 .

In 1950 he became managing director of the German Agricultural Society , which delegated him to Markkleeberg . There he organized a horticultural exhibition for the first time, which he had developed, and was also committed to ensuring that the agra agricultural exhibition was located in Markkleeberg. Under his leadership the scope of the exhibitions increased continuously and from 1958 the agra agricultural exhibition of the GDR took place for the first time with international participation. In recognition of his services, Baumgarten was appointed professor by the GDR Academy of Agricultural Sciences in 1967 .

On November 24, 2007, on the occasion of his 100th birthday, he was made an honorary citizen of Markkleeberg. In 2011, his honorary citizenship was revoked due to his NSDAP membership.
