Oskar Oehler (born February 2, 1858 in Annaberg (Erzgebirge), † October 1, 1936 in Berlin ) was a German clarinetist and musical instrument maker . He is the creator of the Oehler system .

Life

As early as 1858 he moved with his parents to Weida in East Thuringia , where he did an organ builder apprenticeship from 1873 . From 1876 Oehler received clarinet lessons in the local city band before he became a member of the Berlin Philharmonic in 1883 after working as a clarinetist in Halle (Saale) , Nice , Hamburg and London . In 1887 he opened a workshop for woodwind instruments in Berlin-Schöneberg in order to devote himself above all to making clarinets, improving bores and making mouthpieces . He gave up his job as clarinetist with the Berliner Philharmoniker in 1888.

Among the acoustic and mechanical improvements that Oehler developed for the clarinets, the Oehler mechanism named after him - the fork B / F mechanism with a blind cover on the lower part - is the best known. He is said to have designed it on a beer felt during the “twilight pint” and then put it into practice with FG Uebel in his workshop. Oehler's technical intentions have not been passed down, since the registered utility model is no longer preserved as a document. What is certain is that he wanted to improve the sound and mood of the fork -b / F2 handles. He also achieved a more balanced tuning of the clarinet, especially in the third position. The Oehler mechanics are still being built by almost all manufacturers of German clarinets and are the standard for professional instruments. This development is considered by many to be the last major improvement in the German clarinet system.

His students include Georg Graeßel ( Nuremberg ), Friedrich Arthur Uebel ( Markneukirchen ) and Ludwig Warschewski ( Stockholm ).
