Oskar Rümmele

Oskar Rümmele (born May 6, 1890 in Hausen im Wiesental , † June 29, 1975 in Waldkirch ) was a German trade unionist and politician ( CDU ).

Life and work

After attending school, Rümmele worked as a union secretary at the Protestant workers' and people's associations in Baden from 1912 . From 1914 to 1918 he took part in the First World War as a soldier . In 1919/20 he was the managing director of the Christian trade unions in Ulm , from 1920 to 1924 chairman of the Baden Railway Association and from 1924 to 1933 chairman of the Christian Union of German Railway Workers (CGDE) and the General Association of German Transport and State Employees in Berlin .

After the National Socialists came to power in 1935, Rümmele lost his job for political reasons and then worked as a self-employed businessman in the accommodation trade. At times he was observed by Nazi security authorities for political reasons.

Party membership and membership in parliament

After the Second World War , Rümmele co-founded the CDU in Hinterzarten . From 1948 Rümmele was district manager of the union of German railway workers in Karlsruhe. Rümmele belonged to the German Bundestag since its first election from 1949 to 1957. As a directly elected member, he represented the constituency of Offenburg in parliament. In the first legislative period he was deputy chairman of the Bundestag committee for transport and in the second (1953 to 1957) its chairman. In this function, he enforced the inner-city speed limit of 50 km / h in 1957, against fierce political resistance , according to which the number of people killed in urban traffic fell. He failed to enforce a speed limit on motorways .

Public offices

Rümmele was mayor of the Hinterzarten community from 1948 to 1951.

Aftermath

Despite the verifiable achievements of Rümmele with regard to road safety, he was largely forgotten after his political career.
