Oskar Söhngen

Oskar Otto Erich Söhngen (* 5. December 1900 in Hottenstein , now Wuppertal ; † 28. August 1983 in Berlin ) was a German Protestant theologian.

Life

Söhngen, son of a mine director, studied Protestant theology , musicology and philosophy at the Philipps University of Marburg and the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . In Bonn he received his doctorate in 1922 with the work The mystical experience in Plotin's Weltanschauung for Dr. phil., in Marburg 1924 Lic. theol. . In 1927 he became pastor of the Evangelical Church of the Old Prussian Union in Cologne-Kalk , but in 1932 he switched to the Old Prussian Evangelical High Church Council in Berlin. In 1933 he was put on hold and in 1934 he was called up again. In 1936 he became senior consistorial advisor and music director of the German Evangelical Church (DEK). In a speech at the opening of an “Art Service” exhibition in 1938, he stated u. a .:

" What is created here wants to be ... with full consciousness also to be German art and to be within the scope of the objectives set by the leader of German art ... "

In 1949 he and Otto Bartning were among the initiators of the Protestant Church Building Day.

In 1952 Söhngen was appointed Vice President of the Church Chancellery of the Evangelical Church of the Union , and he was also President of the Von Canstein Biblical Institute .

In the 1950s and 1960s he was co-editor of Art and Church. Quarterly magazine for church building and church art .
