Oskar Theodor Kuntze

Oskar Theodor Kuntze (born November 30, 1827 in Grimma , † February 7, 1911 in Plauen ) was a German politician. He was the first Lord Mayor of Plauen and a member of the first chamber of the Saxon state parliament .

Live and act

The son of the teacher Johannes Gottlieb Kuntze and his wife Emilie geb. Like his brother Emil Kuntze (1824–1894), Fechner in Grimma attended the Nikolaischule. From 1849 to 1851 he studied at the University of Leipzig law . He then took up a job as a legal assistant in Leipzig. After 1853 he resigned from positions in Reichenbach in Vogtland and Meerane before he was appointed mayor of Reichenbach. At the meeting of the city council of Plauen on July 4, 1865, he was elected mayor of the Vogtland city, which was particularly home to the embroidery and lace industry. During his tenure, the industrialization of the city a. a. Significantly promoted through the establishment of the "Kunstgewerbliche Fachzeichenschulen" in 1877 and the volunteer fire brigade , connection to the railway network and infrastructural measures such as the construction of a new water supply network and a new educational facility. By resolution of the city council on February 4, 1882, he became the first Lord Mayor of Plauen. In 1889 he was appointed by King Albert as one of the six magistrates of Saxon cities to be appointed by him in the I. Landtag Chamber, to which he belonged for the rest of his term of office as mayor. After almost 28 years in office, Mayor Kuntze retired on May 1, 1893.

Kuntze is considered one of the leading reformers of the savings banks in the 1880s. He caused the Saxon savings banks to expand their product offerings from 1882 in order to cope with the growing private competition. He pushed the founding of the Saxon Savings Banks Association , which existed from 1883 to 1885 as an association and representation of interests of the Saxon savings banks.

Honors

On the occasion of his 25th anniversary as head of the city, he was given honorary citizenship of the city of Plauen on October 5, 1890 . On the Neundorfer Berg, the Kuntzehöhe established by the Association of Friends of Nature and the Kuntzehöhe elementary school remind of him.
