Ignaz Rungaldier (born July 9, 1799 in Graz ; † November 20, 1876 ​​there ) was an Austrian portrait and genre painter .

Life

Ignaz Rungaldier was the son of Johann Georg Rungaldier. His family originally came from South Tyrol , was known for their gold and silver work and moved to Graz at the end of the 18th century. He received his first drawing lessons at the drawing school in Graz from Johann Veit Kauperz (1741–1816) and, because of his talent, was admitted to the Vienna Academy with Vinzenz Georg Kininger (1767–1851) in 1817 and refined his skills in the master class for engravers . During this time he was awarded five times for his achievements (1818, 1820, 1823 (2 ×), 1824) and thus developed into an important Austrian engraver and mezzotint artist .

Due to the increased emergence of lithography , Rungaldier soon turned to the new process and from 1825 devoted himself to miniature painting under the influence of Carl Josef Alois Agricola (1779–1852) and Johann Nepomuk Ender , whose works he first copied and later adopted his style. He stayed in Vienna until around 1836, after which he returned to his hometown Graz.

Rungaldier was one of the most sought-after portrait painters of aristocratic society in the Biedermeier period . In addition to many fine and detailed portraits , he also created a number of romantic genre, landscape and hunting scenes in his early years . In many of his works he makes masterful use of graphic reproduction techniques such as copperplate engraving, mezzotint , but also lithography. His miniature portraits are often executed as fine watercolors or sometimes only in pencil with white highlights .

Today his works can be found in many museums such as the Joanneum in Graz and the Austrian Belvedere Gallery .
