Osmanabad ( Marathi उस्मानाबाद ) is a city in the district of the same name in the southeast of the Indian state of Maharastra . The area had belonged to the historical Marathwada region since 1724 and was part of the princely state of Hyderabad .
location
Osmanabad lies on the Dekkan Plateau at a height of approx. 665 m ; after heavy or long-lasting rains, the Boghavati -River brushes parts of the urban area. The distance to the western metropolis of Pune is almost 280 km (driving distance); to Mumbai it is just under 430 km to the northwest. The climate is temperate to warm; Rain (approx. 830 mm / year) falls almost exclusively in the summer monsoon season .

The Marathi , Hindi and Urdu- speaking city population consists of about 67.5% Hindus , a good 25.5% Muslims and about 5% Buddhists ; Jains , Christians , Sikhs and others are numerically small minorities . As is common with censuses in many regions of India, the male population is about 7% higher than the female.
economy
In the villages in the agriculturally oriented area, cotton , wheat , lentils and oilseeds are mainly grown. The city itself serves as a center for crafts, trade and services of all kinds.
history
The region belonged to different powers on the Indian subcontinent, but only the princely state of Hyderabad , which was dominant from 1724 to 1956 under the rule of the Marathas and the British , left its mark on today's urban area. The founding of the city of Osmanabad goes back to Osman Ali (r. 1911–1948), the last ruler ( nizam ) of the princely state.
