Osmiridium

Osmiridium is a platinum metal - alloy and variety of iridium , as the mineral occurs naturally. Osmiridium itself is not recognized (discredited) as a mineral by the International Mineralogical Association . In addition to iridium, it contains the chemically similar metal osmium .

Osmiridium contains a maximum of 24% osmium and must not be confused with the iridium-containing osmium variety iridosmium , which contains at least 55% osmium.

Occurrence

Osmiridium is rare and occurs in association with other platinum metals. Locations are among others in New South Wales and Tasmania , Australia ; British Columbia in Canada ; the Chinese provinces of Hebei , Sichuan and Tibet , Nová Paka in the Czech Republic , Peyrolles-en-Provence in France , South Africa , Russia and the United States ( Alaska , California , Nevada and Oregon ).
