Wiios laws

The basic statement is in the original:

"Viestintä yleensä epäonnistuu, paitsi sattumalta."

"Communication usually fails, except by accident."

- Osmo Wiio

The English language version is also known : Communication usually fails, except by accident. It is to be understood, similar to the somewhat older Murphy's laws , as wisdom . Wiio has added a few more statements to its basic statement.

  • Communication usually fails except by accident.
    • If communication can fail, it will.
    • If communication cannot fail, it often will.
    • If communication seems to be going the way it was intended, there is a misunderstanding.
    • If you are satisfied with the content of the message, communication is sure to fail.
  • If a message can be interpreted in different ways, it is interpreted in such a way that the damage is maximal.
  • There is always someone who, better than you, knows what you meant by the message.
  • The more we communicate, the less successful the communication.
    • The more we communicate, the faster misunderstandings spread.
  • In mass communication, what matters is not how things are, but how they appear to be.
  • The meaning of a message is inversely proportional to the square of its distance.
  • The more important a situation is, the more likely you are to forget something essential that you thought about a moment before.
