Osmund von Sées (* in Sées , today in the Orne department ; † December 3, 1099 ) was Bishop of Salisbury and is a Catholic saint .

Life

Osmund or Osmond was born in Sées in the Duchy of Normandy as the son of Henri de Centville, Count of Sées , and Isabella. He was Earl of Dorset (from 1070) and Bishop of Salisbury (from 1078).

He was the confessor of Wilhelm the Conqueror , but is also referred to as his nephew, which can only be due to his mother, who is referred to in some sources as Wilhelm's sister, in others as Isabella von Conteville and thus Wilhelm's half-sister.

Osmund is one of those who was commissioned by William the Conqueror to compile the Domesday Book , the work in which all possessions of the Norman knights in England, but also in other countries, as well as their genealogies, were recorded. Osmund was present when the book was accepted by the landowners and they swore allegiance to Wilhelm ( Freemans conquest ).

He accompanied William in the conquest of England in 1066 , was at the Battle of Hastings , and in 1078 became Bishop of Salisbury.

He was Lord Chancellor of the Kingdom of England from 1070 to 1078 and Earl of Dorset from 1070. According to the Domesday Book, he appears to have owned properties in Derbyshire , Somerset , Leicestershire and Nottingham .

The Wiltshire Cathedral , which he initiated construction, was consecrated on April 5, 1092. He trained missionaries , founded a school for clergy to reorganize the Catholic rites , created the liturgy of Old Sarum , the Register of St Osmund , a collection of documents with the chronological order of the Masses, as well as everything related to his Diocese of Sarum (the old name of Salisbury) had. His liturgical reform was adopted across the British Isles.

Death and beatification

He died on the night of December 3, 1099 and was buried first in Old Sarum, then in July 1457 in the new Salisbury in a sarcophagus with the simple inscription "MXCIX" (1099).

As early as 1228, Richard Poore , the Bishop of Salisbury, and his canons applied to Pope Gregory IX. the canonization of Osmund, but it took until January 1, 1457, until he was by Kalixt III. was canonized.
