List of the Bishops of Salisbury
The Bishop of Salisbury is the head of the Diocese of Salisbury , in the Ecclesiastical Province of Canterbury , in the Church of England .
The diocese includes much of the counties of Wiltshire and Dorset . It is based in Salisbury Cathedral .
The origin of today's diocese was the Sherborne diocese, founded around 705 . Its seat was moved by a decision of the City Council from London to Sarum and in 1227 under King Henry III. Relocated to Neu Sarum and Salisburg.
The first bishop was Aldhelm von Sherborne . The 77th and final Bishop of Salisbury was David Stancliffe , ordained at Westminster Abbey in 1993 and enthroned in Salisbury Cathedral. He retired in 2010. The Chapter elected Nicholas Roderick Holtam , Vicar at St. Martin-in-the-Fields , Diocese of London, as its successor in 2011 .
