John Baker (Bishop)

John Austin Baker (born January 11, 1928 in Birmingham - † June 4, 2014 ) was a British Anglican theologian and university professor . He was Bishop of Salisbury in the Church of England from 1982 to 1993 .

Career

Baker was born in 1928 to George Austin Baker and his wife Grace Edna Baker. He attended Marlborough College . He studied at Oriel College of the University of Oxford . In preparation for the priesthood he studied theology at Ripon Theological College in Cuddesdon , near Oxford . In 1954 he was ordained a deacon ; In 1955 he was ordained a priest . He began his priestly career as a vicar (curate) at All Saint's in Cuddesdon and at St Anselm's Church in Hatch End . From 1959 to 1973 he was a fellow , chaplain (Chaplain) and lecturer (Lecturer) at Corpus Christi College, University of Oxford. He was also a lecturer and professor at Brasenose College and Lincoln College, University of Oxford. In 1967 he was visiting professor at Trinity College in Hartford , Connecticut .

From 1973, he was up to his elevation to bishop Residenzkanoniker ( Residential Canon , Canon) at the Westminster Abbey . From 1974 to 1975 he was visiting professor at King's College London at the University of London . From 1978 to 1982 he was Sub-Dean (Sub-Dean) and "Lector Theologiae" at Westminster Abbey. At the same time he was pastor (rector) at St Margaret's Church in Westminster . He was also at this time Kaplan (Chaplain) of the Speakers of the House of Commons .

He was ordained bishop in 1982 and succeeded George Reindorp , Bishop of Salisbury in the Church of England. In 1993 he retired. He was succeeded as Bishop of Salisbury by David Stancliffe . Regardless of his retirement, he served as Honorary Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Winchester since 1994 .

Baker was a member of the Doctrine Commission of the Church of England from 1967 to 1981 and again from 1984 to 1987 ; 1985-1987 he was the chairman (Chairman) . From 1983 to 1987 he was a member of the Standing Committee of the General Synod of the Church of England and the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches .

Baker served as Ecclesiastical Lord of the House of Lords from 1986 until his retirement in 1993, in his capacity as Bishop of Salisbury .

Baker authored several books on religious and canon law topics. He wrote u. a. the books The Foolishness of God (1970), Prophecy in the Church (1976) and The Whole Family of God (1981).

Baker was married to Gillian Mary Leach (MBE) since 1974. His hobbies included traveling and music .
