history

OstbelgienFestival is the most important festival for classical music in the German-speaking community. It offers music lovers the opportunity to attend high-quality concerts throughout the region. It takes place in the same way as the annual regional concert series Festival van Vlaanderen and Festival de Wallonie , which, along with the world-famous Concours Musical International Reine Elisabeth for young soloists, are among the most important music festivals for classical music in Belgium.

The impetus for the establishment in 1992 was given by Manfred Dahmen, Director of the Transport Office of the Eastern Cantons , Georg Noël, Chairman of the Eupen Symphonic Concerts Association , and Joseph Schroeder, Managing Director of the St. Vith People's Education Center . Their aim was to get the local music organizers to work closely together. This should avoid individual actions, as well as overlapping appointments. It was hoped that joining forces would open up new financing options.

aims

OstbelgienFestival has set itself the task of presenting the capabilities of the German-speaking Community (DG) in Belgium in the cultural sector across the region. For this purpose, music-cultural events are planned and carried out. This is done with the aim of presenting artists of international standing to the East Belgian public on site and at the same time to interest foreign audiences in the DG.

OstbelgienFestival organizes symphonic, chamber and solo concerts with a focus on classical and contemporary music , with jazz , chanson and folk also finding their place in the program. It is the only regional music festival in the German-speaking community of Belgium.

concept

The first season in autumn 1993 was already successful. Leaving conventional concert halls and opening acoustically and architecturally valuable rooms with their special ambience to a wider audience played an important role in this. There are now 18 to 24 concerts every year.

circle of friends

The Freundeskreis, founded in 1995, now has over 200 members from all over Belgium, the Netherlands , Germany and Luxembourg .

The Union

OstbelgienFestival is a non-profit association (VoG) . The chairman is Georg Noël, the artistic director of the music editor of the BRF Hans Reul, and Steven Gass has been the managing director since 2014.
