The Osterburger Utkiek is a 48-  hectare park in the Oldenburg district of Osternburg on the site of the former Eidechsenstrasse landfill . The green area was opened on October 2nd, 2009.

history

The landfill was created in 1973 between the Oldenburg districts of Osternburg and Kreyenbrück on land that had previously been used for agriculture. First of all, the "old field" in the south of the site with an area of 26 hectares was used for waste disposal. 21 years later the “Neufeld” in the north with an area of eight hectares was developed and the “old field”, which is no longer used, was renatured . In 1994 the plant was expanded again due to increased waste volumes, but its use was limited until 2003.

When the landfill was used, three cones of material were created; two in the area of the "old field", one in the area of the "new field". At 28.15 meters, the “Neufeld” is slightly higher than the two cones of the “Altfeld”.

In order to develop a usage concept for the time after the closure of the landfill, which went beyond the mere aftercare obligation of the waste management company of the city of Oldenburg, a landscape planning competition was carried out in 2003.

The landfill was closed at the end of December 2003. Until August 8, 2009, recyclable materials , bulky and hazardous waste and other waste could still be deposited on the site .

Development and use as a district park

Climbing element on the old field

After the land was no longer used as a landfill, the facility was secured and the facilities required for aftercare, such as gas wells, pumping stations and leak detection, were built. These facilities were fenced off.

The "Neufeld" was renatured and redesigned together with the "Altfeld" into a district park. For this purpose, the terrain was modeled and paths were laid between the three cones. An S-shaped ridge path connects the crests of the three cones. In addition, other, less steep paths and a circular path were laid out. The site is accessible from several sides. A southern entrance is planned, but not yet created.

Squares were created on the crests of the cones. The place on the top of the "Neufeld" is the highest point of the actual view ("Utkiek"). A viewing facility is provided here. The squares have been designed on the two crests of the “Altfeld”. Tiled pergolas with seating and two large play elements have been erected on them. A heart-shaped climbing element was erected on the middle dome and a partner swing on the southern dome.

The existing, tree-lined belt is located around the new district park, thus safeguarding its importance for nature and landscape protection as well as the landscape. This is also fenced in because parts of it have not yet been finally covered. No trees may be planted on the landfill site itself, as their roots would destroy the sealing film of the landfill body.

A sports and leisure area is planned for a later date between the remaining garbage bunker and the landfill. For the garbage bunker, there are considerations to redesign it as a climbing facility.

A fitness trail consisting of five stations was laid out south of the garbage bunker at the beginning of 2012. A slope of the south hill can be used as a toboggan hill in winter . Furthermore, the Utkiek is used for various sports competitions because of its demanding running profile.

natural reserve

With the support of NABU Germany , beds with plants suitable for butterflies were created on the Easter burger Utkiek . A main focus was placed on the settlement of the swallowtail .
