The company Ostfriesische Tee Gesellschaft GmbH & Co. KG , headquartered in Seevetal, is a global manufacturer of tea in bags and, through its sister company Onno Behrends in the north, also of loosely packaged tea.
history
The company was founded in 1907 by Paula and Laurens Janssen in Leer under the name Ostfriesische Tee Gesellschaft GmbH . In 1953 Laurens Spethmann, grandson of the company founder, took over the GmbH and led the company from a classic tea importer to a tea packer.
With the creation of the Milford brand in 1966, the development from a private label to a branded goods manufacturer began. In 1972 the business area was expanded beyond the German area for the first time with the acquisition of Grosch Tee in Innsbruck , later called Milford Tee Austria .
The tea company OnnO Behrends GmbH & Co. ( Norden ) was taken over in 1988. It is one of three companies in East Frisia that produce tea with the protected label of real East Frisian tea .
In 1990 Ed. Meßmer GmbH & Co. ( Frankfurt am Main and Grettstadt ) bought the Meßmer brand .
Another very successful segment are the so-called private labels , which the Ostfriesische Tee Gesellschaft produces for various retail chains . For example, parts of the Lord Nelson , Cornwall , Captains Tea and Westcliff tea range are produced by the East Frisian Tea Company for Lidl , Norma , Netto and Aldi .
All holdings of the Ostfriesische Tee Gesellschaft were transferred to Laurens Spethmann Holding AG & Co. KG in 1996 . The change to the fourth generation of the family followed.
