The Ostseeland was the state yacht of the German Democratic Republic .

history

The ship was built for about 15 million East German marks at the Peene shipyard in Wolgast and launched on June 30, 1971. The 61 meters long and 8 meters wide ship was based on a reinforced hull of a minesweeper of the Condor II class . Powered by two 2500 hp diesel engines, it was 18 knots fast.

The yacht was equipped with 16 cabins, a sun deck and an anti-roll system that was subsequently installed.

It was used, among other things, to entertain state guests. However, it was only rarely used because, on the one hand, Erich Honecker was prone to seasickness and, on the other hand, a state yacht did not quite fit the egalitarian ethos of the workers-and-farmers state . The yacht was in Warnemünde in the military area of the port.

Remains in the GDR after reunification

After the reunification in the GDR, the ship was sold to a Swedish owner and was named Aniara . The ship was in Copenhagen for several years . At the end of the 1990s, the Teltower ship charter company Blue Marlin wanted to convert the Baltic Sea into a cruise ship for Ostalgiker , but failed because of financial difficulties.

Most recently, ownership of the ship changed from a Turkish owner to a businessman from Dubai ( UAE ) in mid-2005 .

Others

There was also a previous ship, the Ostseeland II . It was built as the first state yacht of the GDR in 1961 at the Warnow shipyard in Warnemünde and was originally also called Ostseeland . After October 1990 she was briefly used as a charter ship in the White Fleet . The yacht was then sold to C. and H. Heuvelmann in the Netherlands on March 20, 1991 .
