history

After the Second World War , private shipowners resumed shipping to a modest extent in 1945, initially under the name “Arbeitsgemeinschaft Binnenschiffahrt corporation under public law” based in Berlin . On October 27, 1949, the state-owned company "Deutsche Schiffahrts- und Umschlagbetriebs-Zentrale" (DSU) with its main office in Stralsund was established in the GDR, which had since been founded . This company was entrusted with the entire transport of goods and people on the inland waterways of the GDR .

Founded on January 1, 1957, VEB Fahrgastschiffahrt Stralsund "White Fleet" , based in Stralsund , was supposed to take over most of the excursion and scheduled traffic with ships along the entire GDR Baltic coast. In the first year, the company initially had eleven employees and a further 17 employees, as well as ten motor ships that offered 1,511 places.

Over the years, branches were set up along the Baltic coast, the ships were modernized and the staff increased. The lines and excursions at the time included trips to Gedser , Fehmarn and Møn , tours around Rügen and Hiddensee , deep sea trips and harbor tours. After extensive modernization of the ships of the "White Fleet" in 1958/1959 and the start of ferry traffic to Altefähr , z. B. with the Stralsund , the number of ships grew at the beginning of 1959 to 17 ships with a total of 2,488 passenger seats. Three years later, the number of passenger ships increased to 23 when the cooperative shipping company Hiddensee GmbH Vitte was taken over. A total of 3251 places were now available. In 1961 two hydrofoil boats TF 10-1 and TF 10-2 came from Roßlau on the Elbe to the "White Fleet", which were used on the Unterwarnow between Rostock Kabutzenhof and Warnemünde . At the end of 1963, 36 passenger ships with 4740 seats and two freighters drove on a total of 44 lines of the “White Fleet”.

In 1974, the “White Fleet” was further modernized by purchasing three Kometa-M hydrofoils . The boats built in the USSR at the Poti shipyard (Grusinische SSR) were intended for express traffic on the Stralsund - Sassnitz - Stettin or Rostock - Wismar lines . With a speed of 32  knots (60 km / h), for example, these boats only needed around four hours for the Stralsund - Sassnitz - Swinoujscie route and were therefore much faster than the slower seaside resorts .

With a fleet of three hydrofoils, 31 passenger ships, seven ferries, two freighters and a ferry pusher unit for heavy goods transport, 4.7 million passengers were carried on 85 routes in 1989.

In 1990 the company was privatized and taken over by the shipping association Förde Reederei Seetouristik (FRS) from Flensburg. The traditional name “White Fleet” was retained. All the old ships were sold and exchanged for new, more modern and more comfortable ships.

The President of the Rügen District Council , Gesine Skrzepski , opened the new dock for the Wittower ferry in 1994 .

In 1995 the shipping company Hiddensee GmbH was founded as a subsidiary of the White Fleet. The Hiddensee shipping company operates regular services from Zingst , Wiek , Stralsund and Schaprode to Hiddensee Island . With the founding of the shipping company Hiddensee, the area of responsibility of the “White Fleet” shifted to ferry traffic (across the Strelasund : Glewitz - Stahlbrode, via the Neuer Strom in Rostock: Warnemünde - Hohe Düne and the Wittower ferry on Rügen) and excursion traffic on the Baltic Sea.

By investing in the construction of passenger ships, the ship fleet was expanded to include numerous Bodden cruisers (MS "Insel Hiddensee", MS "Gellen", MS "Schaprode", MS "Hansestadt Stralsund") People used for express traffic between the mainland, the island of Rügen and the island of Hiddensee.

Another modernization and expansion of the ship fleet was carried out in 1996. The “White Fleet” put a passenger ship into service for the Stralsund harbor with the name Altefähr for the ferry traffic Stralsund - Altefähr , harbor tours and charter trips and the most modern catamaran in Germany. The catamaran was named Hanse Jet . This new building offered the opportunity to go to Denmark , Usedom , Poland and Fehmarn . In 1997 another catamaran called Baltic Jet was added. In addition, the car ferry connection Schmarl - Oldendorf via the Unterwarnow in Rostock was put into operation as part of the public transport offer within the Warnow transport association .

With the Flying-Adler-Line White Fleet, a joint company was founded in 1998 that offered excursions on the Sassnitz - Swinoujscie route . After the expiry of the duty-free regulations for trips within the EU in July 1999, the catamaran "Baltic Jet" no longer traveled on the Warnemünde - Gedser route, but from Warnemünde to Copenhagen .

In 2000, the two passenger ships Gellen and Schaprode were rebuilt and each extended by eight meters. In 2003 the Altefähr passenger ship was also rebuilt and lengthened by six meters.

On January 1, 2014 (or with the start of the 2014 season), the public transport ferry lines F11, F12, F21 and F23 in Berlin started operating on behalf of the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) within the Verkehrsverbund Berlin Brandenburg (VBB). The transport services had previously been put out to tender when the contracts with the old operator expired.
