The Osttiroler Bote , whose logo adorns the summit cross of the Grossglockner , covers 95% of East Tyrolean households. This makes it Austria's most successful commercial newspaper in the possible distribution area.

timeline

After the Second World War , East Tyrol and Carinthia were part of the British zone of occupation. There were big problems with the food supply back then. For this reason, the chairman of the district chamber of farmers and chamber for nutrition, Franz Kranebitter, was looking for a way to address and inform the population. This gave rise to the idea of publishing a district newspaper.

The mayor of Gaimberg Siegmund Rainer (chairman of the press committee until 1956) and Sr. Elsbeth Obererlacher from the Dominican convent were responsible for the editing . On January 10, 1946 , the first East Tyrolean messenger was printed by the Lienz company JG Mahl.

Half a Tyrolean eagle, which was on the head of the newspaper, became a symbol. This was supposed to symbolize the torn Tyrol and also stood for the endeavor to reunite South Tyrol with Tyrol. The British officer in charge did not agree with this. For him this was an inadmissible form of politics and he threatened to withdraw his license and stop the allocation of paper. That is why mountains and an alpine hut adorned the header from the fourth edition.

Due to a lack of paper, the first eight issues could only be issued every two weeks. The Osttiroler Bote could be bought for 15 groschen and had an average circulation of 3,500 pieces in the first year. From April 1946 the "Bote" was published weekly.

The first advertisements appeared in the third edition. You could read sports reports in issue 14. The "Osttiroler Heimatblätter" were printed in No. 20 for the first time.

The "Heimatblätter" are a monthly special supplement of the Osttiroler Bote. The initiative for this local history came from cooperator Karl Maister and the nun Obererlacher in 1923. Hermann Wopfner is considered to be the real founder. The issue was discontinued between 1936 and July 1946.

The newspaper was administered by the JG Mahl printing company. In 1966, the Osttiroler Bote moved to the office of Director Ernst Falkner. In the end, the newspaper bought today's house in Schweizergasse.

Further development

The Osttiroler Bote was well received by the population from the start. Peter Duregger became editor- in- chief in his third year and worked in this position for the Osttiroler Bote for decades. In 1990, after 42 years, the editorial management passed to Robert Hatzer. This modernized the newspaper, changed its structure and also adapted it to the changed consumer habits.

Josef Totschnig was the administrator from the time it was founded until 1968 . His successor was Erwin Santer, who secured the “messenger” an economic foothold with advertisements . Karl Libiseller has been responsible for economic management since 1992.

With the four-color printing was started in the 1992nd The Oberdruck company offered new production possibilities. The newspaper became more colorful and could from now on be delivered every Thursday. This also significantly increased the print run .

This was followed by the reorganization of the advertising section, event and congratulatory advertisements were given a fixed place, and special topics and reports were introduced. All of this gave the newspaper a boost.

The publishing house was enlarged in 1995/96. In addition, five employees were hired to take care of the typesetting and layout of the Osttiroler Bote. So the newspaper took the design into its own hands.

In 1997 the newspaper was incorporated into the Osttiroler Bote Medienunternehmen Ges.mbH (property of the Osttiroler Bote Privatstiftung). The foundation board consisted of the following three people: Werner Hofer (Steuerberatung Werner Hofer GmbH), Alfred Greil and the chairman Friedrich Schneeberger (District Chamber of Commerce). Alfred Greil has since been replaced by Martin Mayerl (district farmers' association, ÖVP).

The old publishing house was renovated in 1999 and 2000 and two floors were added.

The East Tyrolean messenger today

The Osttiroler Bote is now more than a newspaper.

At the end of January 1997, the newspaper, in cooperation with the online company Permedia, created an internet portal to follow the events in East Tyrol. The portal made it possible to read articles from the Osttiroler Bote online. In December 2005 the website was redesigned.

The "Bote" also made possible the East Tyrolean district radio "Radio Osttirol", which has a daily range of 26%. The newspaper took care of the financing of the project with its own investors. "Radio Osttirol" is managed by its own GmbH. The Osttiroler Bote has a 91% share in this.

At the beginning of 1999 the newspaper published the “Oberkärnter Volltreffer”, a weekly paper, with an initial circulation of 17,000. Thus, the Osttiroler Bote was also active in Upper Carinthia and this had the consequence that the circulation area of the advertising section expanded by 150%. This also increased the attractiveness and advertising effectiveness of the “messenger”. The bull's eye is read in the Möll , Drau , Gail , Gitsch and Lesachtal valleys , on the Weißensee and in the cities of Spittal and Hermagor and now has a circulation of 27,800 copies. The “Upper Carinthian direct hit” was followed in 2006 by the “Pustertaler direct hit”. With this innovation, the distribution area could be extended to the South Tyrolean Puster Valley as far as Bruneck . Separate editorial offices take care of the local reporting of the two media. However, the advertising section of the “Volltreffer” and that of the Osttiroler Bote are identical.

The Osttiroler Bote also offers an additional graphic offer. The publisher's own typesetting studio "OB-Grafik" prints leaflets , posters and books, among other things . Young entrepreneurs have the opportunity to have company logos developed by the graphics department.

Editorial policy

“The 'Osttiroler Bote' is a weekly newspaper, serves as an information medium for the Lienz / East Tyrol district and would like to contribute to the constructive development of the region. It includes the monthly supplement of the 'Osttiroler Heimatblätter'. "
