The Oswald Chapel is not far from the old road from Zurich to Winterthur , in the hamlet of Breite in the municipality of Nürensdorf in the canton of Zurich . Ecclesiastically it belongs to the Evangelical Reformed parish of Bassersdorf -Nürensdorf. The chapel is Oswald of Northumbria , an Anglo-Saxon king of the 7th century consecrated .

history

The chapel was built in the 12./13. Century in 1172 first mentioned "Preiti" built. and after a fire around 1347 it was rebuilt using the preserved outer walls. In 1370 it was mentioned as a branch of the Marienkirche in Kloten . The Embracher Chorherrenstift and the Schwend family from the city of Zurich practiced in the 15th and 16th centuries. Century the lower jurisdiction over the yard width from. High jurisdiction came to the Habsburgs in 1264 after the Counts of Kyburg died out and to the city of Zurich in 1424/1452, which acquired lower jurisdiction in 1524 after the secularization of Embrach Monastery and in 1538 through purchase . The chaplaincy benefice donated by the knight Konrad Schwend around 1493 and expanded in 1509 by the Kloten pastor Ulrich Kern, allowed the pastor of Bassersdorf to read the mass twice a week. In 1539, the Zurich council had assigned the hamlet to the parish of Bassersdorf at the request of the population.

Exterior

The late medieval building structure and the roof construction from 1347 have been preserved without major changes. Roofs and other renovations were carried out in 1650 and 1720. In 1843 the gable roof of the ridge turret was replaced by today's shingle, octagonal pointed helmet . The chapel consists of the nave and the retracted choir to the east . The Romanesque Pietra-Rasa plastering over the reading stones with its grouting has largely been preserved. The roofing with hollow bricks took place in the 16th century or earlier.

In the roof turret there are two bells from the pre-Reformation period. The disused church clock from 1775 was made by Christian Zeller. The window openings in the nave and choir date from different eras. Originally only the left arched window existed on the south wall of the ship.

Interior and equipment

The early Gothic painting is likely to have been created in the course of the reconstruction after the fire. After the Reformation, a clock and in 1584 a pulpit - now in storage - were purchased. The two eight-row pews with their side panels made from a board, in which the seat boards are embedded, were made around 1648. The murals from the 14th and 15th centuries were extensively renovated and supplemented in 1920. Early Gothic pictures are still preserved on the south, west and north walls. Gothic arcades with a green background separate the scenes from childhood and the passion of Christ.

The high Gothic paintings in the choir arch and on the choir walls were created in the middle of the 15th century. In addition to the namesake of the church, they show a cycle of apostles and other saints. Today's condition was largely reconstructed in 1920 by Christian Schmidt, presumably based on models in the castle chapel at Kyburg Castle and the Brütten church, which was demolished in 1907 .
