The 4th stage of the Tour de France 2011 on July 5th led over 172.5 km from Lorient to Mûr-de-Bretagne . On the flat stage, as in every stage of this Tour de France, there was a sprint classification, there was also a mountain classification in the 4th category and at the end a mountain classification in the 3rd category. All 198 registered drivers started.
When the weather was initially rainy, Jérémy Roy started a breakaway attempt, which was joined by Gorka Izagirre , Imanol Erviti , Blel Kadri and Johnny Hoogerland , who together were able to pull out a lead of almost five minutes at times. Johnny Hoogerland won the first mountain classification and was also ahead in the sprint classification. Omega Pharma-Lotto and the BMC Racing Team did the tracking work. Tyler Farrar won the intermediate sprint of the field. When it was finally less than ten kilometers to the goal, Izagirre and Hoogerland left their three companions behind to try it alone, but this was not crowned with success because they were sent off the field shortly afterwards. Then a group of several riders developed who fought for the stage win. Alberto Contador was the first to step up the pace in the final climb, but was unable to break away. The other drivers didn't succeed either, so the group reached the goal together. Winner of the day was able to Cadel Evans nearly won before Contador for themselves. Andy Schleck crossed the finish line with another group and lost eight seconds to Contador.
