Othmar Fiebiger (born April 21, 1886 in Altenbuch near Trautenau , † February 23, 1972 in Baden-Baden ) was a Sudeten German teacher; he wrote the text for the Giant Mountains song .

Life

Fiebiger came from a farming family. In 1905 he became a teacher. During this time he created the Riesengebirgslied, which was set to music by Vinzenz Hampel in 1915 . In 1919 he moved to Aussig . In 1946 he was expelled. He worked as a teacher in a small town near Erfurt . The government of the GDR considered the Riesengebirgslied as offensive because the Riesengebirge was sung about as the "German Mountains" and forbade it. Because of reprisals Fiebiger moved to the Federal Republic of Bensheim in Odenwald , where he continued to work as a teacher. After retiring from teaching, he worked for a publishing house before spending his retirement years in Baden-Baden. Here he died.
