Othmar Preining

Othmar Preining (born June 28, 1927 in Vienna ; † September 26, 2007 there ) was an Austrian physicist. He is considered a pioneer of aerosol research and one of the founders of the Vienna Aerosol School .

Life

Othmar Preining in 1951 when Felix honorably for Dr. phil. PhD . From 1951 to 1955 he worked as a research assistant and from 1955 as a university assistant. From 1958 to 1960 he did research at the California Institute of Technology . In 1963 he completed his habilitation in experimental physics . In 1965 he stayed for a research project at the US National Center of Aerosol Research and at the University of Minnesota .

In 1968 he was appointed associate professor at the University of Vienna. After a research project at the Georgia Institute of Technology , he became a full professor at the Institute for Experimental Physics at the University of Vienna in 1971 . From 1976 to 1979 he was one of the two board members of the interuniversities EDV-Zentrum-Universitätsrechnerverbundes Wien. In 1981 he was visiting professor at the University at Albany . In 1986/1987 he was dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering. He was prorector of the University of Vienna from 1987 to 1988. In 1995 he retired.

Act

He has set international standards in aerosol research. He was President of the Society for Aerosol Research from 1986 to 1990. During his tenure, he established the "European Aerosol Conference", which took place for the first time in 1987 in Lund, Sweden . In 1982 he received the Erwin Schrödinger Prize and in 1994 the Fuchs Award.

In 1993 he became a real member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and was involved as chairman of the commission for air pollution control of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (1998-2002) and chairman of the commission for the history of natural sciences, mathematics and medicine of the Austrian academy of sciences (1998 -2002).
