Othmar Rieger

Othmar Rieger (born February 22, 1904 in Hartberg ; † February 10, 1966 there ) was an Austrian German scholar , teacher , poet and storyteller .

Life

Born as the son of an estate manager, he attended an officer 's student at a military lower secondary school of the monarchy and then the federal educational institute in Vienna-Breitensee , where he graduated in 1922. He studied philosophy , German and English in Vienna . During his studies in 1922 he became a member of the Ostmark Vienna fraternity . After his studies he became a middle school teacher in Laa an der Thaya . On May 1, 1938 , he became a member of the NSDAP (membership number 6.225.715). From 1938 to 1945 he was the director of the secondary school in Amstetten . In 1944 he took part in World War II and was taken prisoner by the Soviets and taken to the Auschwitz reception camp , where he wrote the poems Die Gemsteinlegende . Returning home in 1945, he took over the management of the Hartberg estate from his father. Otto Hofmann-Wellenhof made it possible for him to appear on the radio . He also worked as an employee of Austrian and German newspapers.
