The Otto-Hahn-Gymnasium is a mathematical and scientific high school in the Kippekausen district of Bergisch Gladbach an der Saaler Mühle . It is named after the natural scientist Otto Hahn .
history
In 1964, the then independent town of Bensberg decided to build a new grammar school with a scientific focus as an alternative to the linguistic grammar schools in the area. As a result, a new grammar school was founded in 1965 under the name "Städtisches Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliches Gymnasium Bensberg" with 37 students initially. In the first years after it was founded, the grammar school had neither a school building nor an administration. Classes took place in pavilions in the school yard of the Albertus Magnus Gymnasium (AMG) in Bensberg as well as in the former Moitzfeld elementary school and in a building on Diakonissenweg Moitzfeld. In addition, the school was expanded to a "high school in the form of a build-up for secondary school graduates" (GAR), which should make it easier for secondary school graduates to enter the upper level.
In 1969 the school was given the name " Otto Hahn -Gymnasium", which still exists today , which underlines the scientific focus. The name was influenced by the partnership with the nearby company Interatom . The official opening ceremony under the new school name took place on July 5, 1969. After the Saaler Mühle was drained, the grammar school received its own separate school center Saaler Mühle building in 1973 , in the form of a cooperative comprehensive school , in the form of a cooperative comprehensive school . This also included the Otto Hahn secondary school, which was located at the Lehmpöhle in Bensberg.
Educational orientation and performance
Initially, the students were taught in the orientation level across classes and school types (horizontal-vertical network system). In addition, so-called ENW courses were introduced to sharpen the scientific profile in grades 5 and 7, which consistently cover the three scientific branches of chemistry, physics and biology across disciplines. The ENW courses are still in 5th grade today. Today, the scientific orientation is strengthened by a large number of differentiation courses that can be chosen in the eighth and ninth grades, as well as by the general number of lessons in the natural sciences.
Reconstruction of the Otto Hahn grammar school
In the course of the upcoming renovation, the scientific focus will be expanded by expanding the scientific rooms. The musical area is enhanced by the construction of an auditorium .
