Otto Brodde

Otto Brodde (born March 21, 1910 in Gilgenburg / East Prussia; † August 24, 1982 in Hamburg ) was a German church musician and professor of liturgy , church music history and hymnology .

Brodde grew up in Dortmund and received music lessons there from Otto Heinermann at an early age. In 1927 he was organist and cantor at the Rothkirch Chapel in Dortmund. From 1929 to 1935 he studied musicology , Protestant theology and German in Königsberg and Münster . His teachers were Karl Gustav Fellerer , Werner Korte, Otto Schmitz, Friedrich Schmidt, Otto Pieper, Julius Schwietering and Günther Müller. In 1935 he was with a thesis on Johann Gottfried Walther doctorate . In 1941 he became a church musician at the Bugenhagenkirche in Hamburg and a lecturer at the church music school in Hamburg, where he taught liturgy, hymnology and the history of church music. In 1950 he took over the position of cantor of the Evangelical Foundation Alsterdorf in Hamburg , where he also worked with the disabled . In 1962 he was appointed church music director , in 1963 he was awarded the title of professor. From 1973 until his death he was Protestant chairman of the working group for ecumenical songs .
