Otto Friedrich Ahlmann (born May 21, 1786 in Norburg , † May 17, 1866 in Gravenstein , buried in Atzbüll ) was a Danish merchant.

Live and act

Otto Friedrich Ahlmann was the son of a Sønderborg captain of the same name (born October 30, 1748 in Sønderborg; † May 8, 1832), who later worked as a merchant in Norburg. He was married to Anna Katrine, née Matzen (born November 20, 1747 in Sonderburg, † January 21, 1817 in Norburg). She was the daughter of the Sonderborg captain Jens Matzen (1713–1755) and his wife Cathrine, née Wrangel (1727–1750).

After attending school in Norburg, Ahlmann completed a commercial apprenticeship in his father's shop and in Flensburg . At an unknown time he moved to Gravenstein and worked here in the shop of the businessman Nicolay Henningsen, who died in June 1808. Ahlmann then asked Christian von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg several times for various concessions to be able to continue trading. In March 1809 he bought the house of the childless Henningsen and the associated lands. He also acquired the associated concessions for trading over water and land and the rights to brew and distill.

Neither the Napoleonic Wars nor the bankruptcy of the Danish state in 1813 disrupted the development of Ahlmann's business. He was able to buy so much land over the years that he owned around 20 percent of Gravenstein. As the only trader in the village, he offered all things that belonged to the rural needs. At the same time he sold the products of Gravenstein farmers to farmers in Sundewitt , who thus did not have to travel to Flensburg, Aabenraa or Sønderborg to buy.

Ahlmann's successes ensured an upswing in Gravenstein, but also led to competition from the surrounding cities, especially Sønderborg. In 1826 King Friedrich VI. in a new Höker regulation that rural traders were not allowed to import products from abroad. Three Sonderburger merchants then reported Ahlmann for prohibited timber imports. Ahlmann defended himself by arguing that Gravenstein a stain is, for the Hökerreglement not apply. After two years he lost the argument.

Ahlmann obviously continued to work as a wholesaler afterwards and had several ship divisions. In 1834 he received the requested license from the Schleswig-Holstein-Lauenburg Chancellery . He thus had the rights of a Flensburg citizen. In 1841 he received the license again. Ahlmann now acted in the entire Duchy of Schleswig . In his environment he was considered a very well-known person, from whom farmers and traders often asked for advice and who found them jobs.

During the Schleswig-Holstein survey , Ahlmann earned a lot of money as a supplier to many Danish and German soldiers in the surrounding area. The fact that he had sided with Duke Christian August of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg turned out to be a disadvantage after the end of the war: in 1852 he was no longer allowed to use the loading and unloading area in Gravenstein. In the following year he asked for the renewal of his license, whereupon he should immediately stop all kinds of trading activities. Since his stored goods were easily perishable, he was able to delay the entry into force of the ban by three months. He had to auction the wood store publicly.

Further efforts by Ahlmann for new concessions failed. Since 1849 he owned a tavern on the market with Höker, bar, brewing and distilling justice. In 1854 he moved his business here. A year later he got an extended Höker's license, based on which he was also allowed to trade in tea, coffee, sugar and stoneware. The concession was renewed several times until 1864. He was still not allowed to do wholesale business. In 1856 Ahlmann signed the business over to his son Hans. Since the concession was issued to his person, he officially remained the owner. After the German-Danish War he was again allowed to trade in full.

family

Ahlmann married Anna Marie Magdalena Lorenzen on June 12, 1810 (* June 8, 1793 in Ekensund ; † January 11, 1855 in Gravenstein). Her father Nis Lorenzen (1752–1793) was married to Anna Magdalene, née Matzen (1773–1799) and owned a brickworks.

Ahlmann's marriage resulted in three daughters and seven sons. The son Thomas (April 4, 1814, † January 3, 1892) worked as a merchant in Frederica and was the father of Johannes Ahlmann . The son Wilhelm Hans Ahlmann worked as a politician, newspaper publisher and banker.
