Otto Hövels

Otto Hövels (born March 26, 1921 in Mülheim an der Ruhr , † September 30, 2014 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German pediatrician .

Life

Hövels came from a small family. From 1939 he studied medicine at the University of Göttingen . In April 1945 he received an emergency license there and obtained his doctorate. In 1948 he went to the University Children's Hospital in Frankfurt am Main as an assistant doctor. There he completed his habilitation in 1953 with the topic The systematics and pathogenesis of malformations of the first visceral arch . In October 1956, Hövels moved to the University Children's Hospital in Erlangen , where he became an associate professor in 1959. From February 1, 1963 to September 30, 1965 he worked as chief physician at the children's clinic in Nuremberg. In February 1965 he was called to Frankfurt and was initially acting head and on October 1, 1965 director of the children's clinic (his predecessor was de Rudder) and full professor for the chair of paediatrics at the medical faculty of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt Main . From February 1971 to September 1975 he was dean of the medical faculty and the human medicine department. During his term of office, the organizational restructuring of the University Medicine in Frankfurt fell on the basis of the Hessian University Act and the Hessian University Act of May 12, 1970. During the student unrest , he was a political dean. Until his retirement on September 30, 1985, he was managing director of the Center for Pediatrics. He was honorary chairman of the Children's Aid Foundation in Frankfurt am Main.

Hövels researched rickets diagnosis and prophylaxis, the pathogenesis of malformations (as part of the thalidomide process , he prepared a decisive report in favor of the injured), metabolic chemical processes in premature babies and infants, and obesity in children.

As a university politician, Hövels was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class in 1986 .
