Otto Kahler

Otto Kahler (born January 8, 1849 in Prague , Austrian Empire , † January 24, 1893 in Vienna , Austria-Hungary ) was an Austrian doctor .

life and work

He studied in his hometown at the Karl Ferdinand University , where he obtained his doctorate in 1871 . After the university was split into a German and a Czech university in 1882 , he continued teaching and researching at the German-speaking university. In 1882 he was appointed associate professor and in 1886 full professor and director of the 2nd Medical Clinic. In 1889 he succeeded Heinrich von Bamberger as professor for special pathology at the University of Vienna . In 1890 he fell ill with carcinoma of the tongue , from which he died in 1893.
Kahler is best known for his description of multiple myeloma or plasmacytoma . The disease therefore bears the name "Kahler's disease", which is rarely used today. He is also considered to be the first to describe syringomyelia .

In 1954, the Kahlergasse in Vienna- Donaustadt (22nd district) was named after him.
