Otto Knigge

Otto Hermann Albert Knigge (born December 14, 1835 in Berlin , † March 5, 1883 in Berlin) was a German portrait and history painter , engraver , etcher and drawing teacher.

Life

Knigge initially received training at the Royal Prussian Academy of the Arts in Berlin. From 1854 to 1861 he learned from the engraver Gustav Lüderitz . Between 1856 and 1880 he regularly took part in the Berlin Academy exhibitions. Around 1860 Knigge studied at the Grand Ducal Saxon Art School in Weimar . He stayed in France between 1863 and 1865 and was a student of Paul Girardet and Thomas Couture in Paris . After 1865, he went back to Berlin, first lived in Taubenstrasse 43 in the city center and was trained in the studio of Oskar Begas . After that, Knigge had his own studio at Friedrichstrasse 88, but his apartment was at Friedrichstrasse 188. In 1875, Knigge passed the examination to become a drawing teacher at grammar schools and got a job at the Askanisches Gymnasium in Friedrichsvorstadt . In 1882 he published the program for the reform of drawing lessons, especially in schools . In 1883 Knigge, who also had himself entered in the address book as portrait and history painter , lived at Königgrätzer Strasse 17 (since 1948 Stresemannstrasse ).

Otto Knigge, who belonged to the St. John's Freemason Lodge on Secrecy , was buried in the old St. Matthäi churchyard in Berlin . His grave is no longer preserved in the 21st century.

Works

His work includes altarpieces for the Petrikirche in Berlin , for the church of the Elisabeth Hospital , contemporary works (for example, together with Hofrat Schneider, at the request of the Prussian King, he painted all the flags captured in the Franco-German War in 1871). Experts appreciate Knigges coloring as being based on Titian .
