Johann Gottfried Otto Krümmel (born July 8, 1854 in Exin , Province of Posen , † October 12, 1912 in Cologne ) was a German geographer and pioneer of oceanography .

Life

Krummel studied from 1873 to 1875 at the University of Leipzig first medicine , then geography and natural sciences . He moved to the University of Göttingen and the University of Berlin . Since 1878 in Göttingen habilitated lecturer of Geography, he went in 1883 as an associate professor at the University of Kiel . In 1884 she appointed him full professor . In 1897/98 he was rector of the University of Kiel. He also taught at the Naval Academy and School (Kiel) and in 1888 took over the management of the Museum of Ethnology at the University of Kiel . From 1911 until his death he was the successor to Theobald Fischer (1846-1910), professor at the University of Marburg . In November 1912 he was to be awarded the Georg Neumayer Medal, awarded every six years by the Society for Geography , the Deutsche Seewarte and the Geographical Society in Hamburg .

In 1889 Krümmel took part in the plankton expedition of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for Nature Research and Travel, which was established in 1860 and from which the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation emerged in 1925 . In the laboratory for international marine research founded in Kiel in 1902 , he headed the hydrographic department. Otto Krümmel developed numerous common today basic tools of Oceanography . He was in regular correspondence with the polar explorer Fridtjof Nansen .
