Otto Kraus (politician)

Otto Josef Kraus (born December 16, 1908 in Nuremberg ; † March 11, 2001 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein ) was a German trade unionist and politician ( SPD ).

Life

After attending primary school in Nuremberg, Kraus did an apprenticeship as a lathe operator. In 1926 he passed the journeyman's examination, after which he worked at the Hilpert armatures and machine factory in the Pegnitzhütte in Nuremberg until 1929 . He attended courses at a vocational training school and the adult education center in Nuremberg, later in Leipzig and at the Heimvolkshochschule in Comburg near Schwäbisch Hall . In 1931 he started working as a mechanic in the electrical engineering industry. However, he was arrested in 1935 and imprisoned in the Dachau concentration camp for two years . After his dismissal he was employed again in the old company, where he worked as a foreman until 1947 and was a member of the works council.

Kraus belonged to the Socialist Workers' Youth and the German Metal Workers' Association and was group leader in the trade union and workers' youth . In 1929 he became a member of the SPD, two years later he was a co-founder of the Socialist Workers' Party in Germany . From 1947 to 1973 he was the first authorized representative and managing director of IG Metall at the administrative center in Nuremberg. He was also a member of the federal executive board of IG Metall, the Broadcasting Council of the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation , the Board of Trustees of the Bavarian State Foundation and from 1957 to 1973 the Bavarian Senate .
