Otto Mensing
Otto Mensing (born July 28, 1868 in Lütjenburg ; † August 19, 1939 in Kiel ) was a German linguist.
Life
Mensing completed his habilitation in Kiel in 1903. As early as 1902, the preparatory work on a dictionary began with an appeal to the population that was printed in Schleswig-Holstein newspapers. Source material about Low German in Schleswig-Holstein should be collected and sent to the initiators. The Schleswig-Holstein Dictionary was published in five volumes between 1925 and 1935. Mensing headed the Low German Society at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel and was appointed professor in 1917. In 1921 he founded the Niederdeutsche Bühne Kiel . He was exempted from teaching in 1928 for his Low German research. In 1937 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .
In Kiel, Mensingstrasse is a reminder of the linguist. In Flensburg , Professor-Mensing-Strasse was named after him.
In 1886 he became a member of the Kiel fraternity of the Krusenrotter .
