Otto Petrenz (born May 4, 1878 in Mittweida , † April 6, 1953 in Kreuzwertheim ) was a German sculptor .

Life

Otto Petrenz was born as the son of the district court assessor Carl Emil Petrenz and his wife Minna. Around 1890 he lived with his parents in Mügeln near Oschatz , where he finished his school education. From 1895 to 1903 he studied sculpture at the Dresden Art Academy with Robert Diez and became his master's student. At Diez he learned the romantic, impressionistic and realistic soft form of representation and figure design. As a student he was already involved in the Dresden art scene and was involved in art exhibitions in the city. He also became a member of the Dresden Art Cooperative and other artists' associations. He received his first awards and recognitions during his studies. In 1897, 1898, 1899 and 1901 he received awards and prizes at the international art exhibitions in Dresden . In 1901 he was awarded the silver medal by the Academy for his artistic work. Primarily for the statue of the Centaur , erected in the Dresdner Heide , he received the golden medal of the academy, for the sculpture An der Tränke he received a price of 6,000 marks. This enabled him to study trips to Hungary , France and Italy from 1904 to 1906 . After his apprenticeship he was one of the most famous visual artists in Dresden.

From 1902 to 1904 as well as 1906 and 1908 he lived in the newly built Loschwitz artist house . His best artistic creative period lasted until the First World War . The war and the suffering it caused hit his temper and the struggle for survival influenced his artistic career. He withdrew and made small sculptures predominantly with animal motifs. He tried to create an ideal world for himself. In the twenties he moved to Kreuzwertheim and developed his talented culinary skills , for which he became very well known. Besides sculpting, he also ran a cider and wine trade. He made works for museums and for public spaces and parks. The painter Emil Paul Börner created a picture by Otto Petrenz in his studio around 1910 , today a private property in Kreuzwertheim. Apparently forgotten, Otto Petrenz died in Kreuzwertheim in 1953.
