Christian Otto Schlecht (born December 21, 1925 in Biberach an der Riss ; † December 3, 2003 in Bonn ) was a German economist and State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Economics .

Life

Otto Schlecht was born on December 21, 1925 in Biberach an der Riss as the son of the Schlecht family of butchers. After studying economics, he joined the Federal Ministry of Economics (today Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy ) as a young adviser under Minister Ludwig Erhard , where he was promoted to State Secretary in 1973 . He worked under eight economics ministers and three federal chancellors. After retiring in 1991 as the longest-serving State Secretary at the time, Otto Schlecht, who was not party to the party, was chairman of the Ludwig Erhard Foundation until his death . He was also a member of the advisory board of the non-profit Bertelsmann Foundation and a member of the Mont Pèlerin Society .

Otto viewed the social market economy as an overarching idea that goes far beyond the economic advantages of the market economy, is complementary to constitutional democracy and can reconcile economic, social and societal ideas. He was close to Alfred Müller-Armack.

He played a leading role in the concept for a "policy to overcome weak growth and fight unemployment" (also known as the " Lambsdorff paper ") and thus, according to Angus Burgin, laid the foundation for what he believed to be unleashing capitalism and the upheavals associated with it Recent economic crises.

Services

Throughout his life, Schlecht was a consistent advocate of market economy principles and advocated competition and social equality. That is why he was regarded as the “market economy conscience” of his ministers and changing governments.
