Epitaph for Otto Tanck in Lübeck Cathedral

Otto Tanck (born February 28, 1587 in Wismar , † February 28, 1637 in Lübeck ) was the City Syndic from 1622 and the Provost of the Cathedral in Lübeck from 1632 .

Life

Tanck, whose parents were the city secretary in Wismar Marcus Tancke and his wife Judith Eggebrecht, studied at the universities of Rostock, Greifswald, Jena, Wittenberg and Basel. He was at the University of Basel Dr. jur. PhD.

Then he was initially the syndic of the Frankish imperial knighthood and their representative at the imperial court in Speyer. As Lübeck's syndic, he accompanied the mayor Johann Kampferbeke to the convention of the evangelical imperial estates in Leipzig in 1631 , who wanted to agree on a common line of action against the Swedish king Gustav II Adolf . In the internal political dispute between the council on the one hand and the Ministry of Spiritual Affairs and its superintendent Nikolaus Hunnius on the other over the exercise of the sovereign church regiment, Tanck's position was that according to the episcopal theory, the council was fully entitled to this and that it was not dependent on the participation of the clergy , 1635 played a key role in the fact that the Lübeck Council took over the church regiment not only in fact, but also under constitutional law, thus subordinating itself to the clergy in the city.

Since 1618 he was married to Johanna Juliane Steuerungagel, daughter of the lawyer and procurator at the Imperial Court of Justice in Speyer, Peter Paulsteueragel from Augsburg. Three children are known from this marriage: Anna Rosina married the mayor of Lübeck Johann Marquard , Judith Christina married the municipal syndicus Martin von Böckel and Johanna Juliana married the lower court actuary Johannes Erasmi.

His epitaph with his portrait painted by Michael Conrad Hirt can be seen in Lübeck Cathedral .
