Otto Vitense (pedagogue)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Otto Carl Ernst Friedrich Vitense (born March 27, 1880 in Wittenburg ; † December 31, 1948 in Neubrandenburg ) was a German educator and Mecklenburg regional historian.

Life

Otto Vitense was the younger son of the teacher and cantor Adolf (Karl Friedrich) Vitense (* 1841) and his wife, the Wittenburg painter's daughter Emma, née. Titus (1855-1915). The pastor in Jabel and later state superintendent in goods Wilhelm (Christian Ludwig) Vitense (1876-1954) was his brother.

Vitense studied history, theology and philology in Leipzig, Berlin and Rostock.

He worked from 1909 to 1948 as a teacher (senior teacher, teacher) at the Neubrandenburg high school. In 1945 he was appointed principal of the high school for boys . From 1945 he belongs to the CDU (according to his own information). In 1948, at the instigation of the SED, he was relieved of all offices because of his support for German reunification.

Vitense developed in Neubrandenburg into one of the most important representatives of regional history journalism in Mecklenburg in the first half of the 20th century. Several monographs and numerous small and large essays identify him as a competent author with a tendency towards a monarchist approach typical of the time and a certain preference for the subject of the German Wars of Liberation from 1813 to 1815. Otto Vitense's story of Mecklenburg (1919) is still valid eighty years after its publication always as (so far) the last significant overall historical presentation. In addition, he actively participated in the preparation of the founding anniversary of his hometown Wittenburg (1926) and was appointed by the state government in 1946 as the first Neubrandenburg district monument curator of the post-war period.

Otto Vitense was married to Elise Krog, daughter of the Feldberger (art) painter and photographer Anton Krog , since 1908 . Of his three children, his son Otto Vitense (1912–1962) became known as a politician.

The city of Neubrandenburg paid tribute to the life and work of the deserving pedagogue in 2005 with a ceremony on the Day of German Unity and by naming an Otto-Vitense-Weg in the immediate vicinity of his long-term home address.
