Otto von Gemmingen (1823–1890)

Otto von Gemmingen (born February 19, 1823 in Rastatt ; † January 3, 1890 in Gorizia ) was an Austrian officer. He was a field marshal lieutenant and chief of genius at the general command in Prague.

Life

Otto von Gemmingen was a son of Ludwig Friedrich Wilhelm von Gemmingen (1794-1858) and Josepha von Lassolaye (1795-1824). He attended the schools in Pforzheim and Karlsruhe . At the age of 14 he entered the engineering academy in Vienna . In 1842 he became a second lieutenant, 1845 first lieutenant, 1848 captain, 1856 major, 1863 lieutenant colonel, 1868 colonel, 1875 major general. By the time he retired in 1888, he had achieved the rank of Lieutenant Field Marshal . He was director of genius in Ofen and Cracow and chief of genius at the General Command in Prague .

He married Sarah Anna Stewart of Ardvorlick (1829-1910) on December 16, 1852. His sons Hermann Erich Franz and Reinhard Erich also pursued higher military careers, two other sons died young.

  1. Stocker (1895) gives January 3 as the date of death, Heitland (1991) January 2.
  2. Stocker (1895) mentions Stewart of Ardvorlick as the family name . Heitland (1991) writes, however, that her name was Steward and that she was the daughter of the owner of the banking house Machillop, Steward & Co., John Steward, and his wife Ellen Lanning Nicholson.
