Oulmès ( Arabic ولماس, Zentralatlas-Tamazight ⵡⴰⵍⵎⴰⵙ ) is a Moroccan small town and rural community ( commune rurale ) with about 25,000 inhabitants in the province of Khémisset in the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region .
location
Oulmès is located in the western hills or mountains of the Middle Atlas at an altitude of about 1250 m above sea level. d. M. The provincial capital Khémisset is about 93 km (driving distance) south; the city of Azrou is about 135 km to the east.
population
Most of the inhabitants who immigrated from the surrounding villages in the second half of the 20th century are of Berber descent. Colloquial languages are Central Atlas Tamazight and Moroccan Arabic .
economy
In the surrounding villages, agriculture and fruit growing (apples, pears, peaches, cherries) are carried out on a large scale; Livestock breeding (sheep, goats, chickens) still plays a not unimportant role and leads to overgrazing and erosion in some areas. The city itself functions as a regional craft, trade and service center and offers the training facilities and health centers that are important for the region. The Oulmès mineral water is bottled on site.
history
As is common in the Berber regions of the Maghreb , there are no written records of the earlier history of the place . At the beginning of the French protectorate (1912) Oulmès was only a village with about 500 inhabitants; The place gained its current importance under the French and especially after the independence of Morocco (1956).
