Khémisset ( Arabic الخميسات, Central Atlas Tamazight ⵅⵎⵉⵙⵙⵜ Xemisset ) is a Moroccan city with around 140,000 inhabitants in the province of Khémisset in the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region .
location
Khémisset is located on the eastern edge of the fertile northern hill country of Morocco ( Zaer ) at an altitude of about 445 m . The city of Meknes is a good 65 km (driving distance) to the east; the Moroccan capital Rabat is about 93 km to the west. The climate is temperate to warm; Rain (approx. 555 mm / year) falls mainly in the winter months.

Most of the inhabitants who immigrated from the surrounding villages in the second half of the 20th century are of Berber descent. However, the colloquial language is usually Moroccan Arabic .
economy
In the surrounding villages, agriculture is practiced on a large scale; Animal husbandry (sheep, goats, chickens), on the other hand, has become rather rare. Carpets are also made at home. history
As is common in the Berber regions of the Maghreb , there are no written records of the earlier history of the place . At the beginning of the French protectorate (1912) Khémisset was only a village with about 1000 inhabitants; The place gained its current importance under the French and especially after the independence of Morocco (1956).
