Out of the Blue (band)

Out of the Blue was an American modern jazz band . It was founded in 1984 on the initiative of the Blue Note label, which wanted to revive its sound of the 1950s and 1960s. According to Wolf Kampmann, the band's significance was "less in their musical output than in their character as a talent factory for a new generation of jazz musicians who were to shape the jazz scene on an individual basis."

Between 1985 and 1989 the band recorded four albums and toured internationally several times; u. a. she performed at the Mount Fuji Jazz Festival . The recording made there Live at Mt. Fuji was their most successful album and reached number 9 on the Billboard Top Jazz Albums chart.

The formation broke up at the end of the decade because the musicians focused on individual careers. Other musicians who participated in the band were Kenny Davis (bass), Steve Wilson (alto saxophone), Renee Rosnes , (piano), Kenny Drew junior (piano) and Billy Drummond (drums). Criticism has often compared the band to Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers because of its function as a talent factory .
