Outgames
The World Outgames is a sports and cultural festival by and for lesbians , gays , bisexuals and trans people , which took place for the first time from July 29th to August 5th, 2006 in Montreal , Canada .
concept
The outgames are preceded by a human rights conference. The aim is to achieve a combination of sport, culture and human rights work. The first such conference was attended by EU Commissioner Vladimír Špidla , United Nations Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbor , MPs including Volker Beck from Germany and Ulrike Lunacek from Austria as well as judges from the Supreme Courts of numerous nations.
The outgames are open to participants of any sexual orientation, participation does not require any qualification. They connect athletes and artists from all over the world, including those athletes and artists in whose countries of origin homosexuality is forbidden or hidden.
The World Outgames are neither to be confused with the AsiaPacific Outgames (2008: Melbourne , 2011: Wellington ) nor with the Gay Games .
1. World Outgames

Actually, Montréal was supposed to host the VII Gay Games in 2006, but because it could not come to an agreement with the Gay Games organization of the Federation of Gay Games , it withdrew its license to host Montreal at short notice in 2004 and instead awarded the VII Gay Games Chicago . Since Montréal was already in the middle of the preparations, the organizers decided to create a completely new event and at the same time to couple this with a political message. This is how the 1st World Outgames came into being, sponsored by numerous companies and media houses in addition to the city of Montréal , the province of Québec and the government of Canada .
The organization, the city of Montréal and the province of Québec welcomed over 10,000 athletes from over 100 countries. Immediately before the outgames, a conference on LGBT human rights had taken place with 1,500 participants, and more than 5,000 volunteers helped to organize the two coupled events. This sports event has been the largest international sports festival in the largest city in the province of Québec since the 1976 Summer Olympics .
Financially, the outgames were a disaster for the organizers. The organizers have amassed a loss of 5.3 million Canadian dollars and then filed for bankruptcy.
2. World Outgames
The 2nd World Outgames should be held in Berlin . After Berlin was unable to maintain its application for 2009, Copenhagen was chosen as the venue on September 2, 2005 . The event took place from July 25th to August 2nd, 2009.
3. World Outgames
The third World Outgames took place from July 31 to August 11, 2013 in Antwerp, Belgium .
4. World Outgames
In 2013, Miami Beach was awarded the contract to host the 2017 Outgames. Exactly one day before the official opening, however, the approximately 3,000 - 4,000 participants who had come from all over the world or were already on their way received an email from the organizer of the Miami Outgames that the event was not held due to financial constraints and most of them the sports and cultural events will not take place. Numerous local organizations as well as the City of Miami Beach, itself sponsor of the outgames, jumped in spontaneously and organized ad hoc replacement events and smaller mini-tournaments in order to at least alleviate the great disappointment.
